I got free toilet paper!!!

So I went grocery shopping at Publix yesterday (local chain in SE), and I had a certain amount of money I was planning to spend, which I only went over by $3 b/c I got my DF a couple of things he asked for.
Anyway, my toilet ppr rung up the wrong amt. Publix will reimburse you the cost of the product if they overcharge you for it, and yes, you get to keep the product. So, I got free toilet paper!! WOOHOO!!

Congrats! I worked once for a huge supply company and as a parting gift they gave me a case (48 roll) of the toilet paper that they supply the luxury hotels with. It was fantastic and it lasted about a year. Free toilet paper is great, hey?
I don't know about the USA, but in Canada there is a national law called the Scanning Code of Practice or some such, and it states that if you are charged an amount higher than the posted price for an item that scans (and also does not have a price tag on it), you get the first item free up to a value of $10. If you buy several of the same item and they are all charged at the higher price than the sign says, you get refunded the difference on the other items.
I just bought a knife (sign said ($24.99) and it scanned at $29.99. I caught the difference before I paid but I was in a hurry and said just put it through. I went straight back to the shelf, took the price tag off and went to the service counter. I got my $5.00 over charge refunded, plus the tax on that $5, and $10.00 off toward getting the item free as per the scanning code of practice. Yes, it was a bit dishonest to let her ring it through then go and complain about getting over charged, because if I hadn't paid for it and simply gone to the service desk and said I want to buy the item but it is scanning at $5 too much, they would simply have charged me $24.99 for it. As it turns out, with the credit I paid $14.99 for a very nice knife.
I've gotten stuff for free when I've paid and noticed after I've left the store that I got charged too much. I figure it's only fair because I've gone back to the store to complain. And lots of times I have not bothered to go back and I end up paying more than the item was supposed to cost.
I'm quite amazed that it has taken me this long to figure out that if I catch something at the till scanning for too much and I just pay (without getting a price check and getting the correct price during the initial checkout process), I can go to the service desk and get the difference plus $10 refunded. I know it is totally dishonest to intentionally not say anything when I notice something scanning at higher than the shelf price so I can get $10 off, so I won't be making a habit of it...but it is the law that they are supposed to give you the item free up to $10 (or $10 off an item priced over $10). This is a huge chain store that this all happened at; at my local grocery store where they know I know the policy, they just refund me the difference...
So there is my slightly dishonest cheapskate tip of the day for anyone who cares to file that one away.
I honestly didn't even notice when she was ringing me up and then when I was leaving, I remembered that DF always looks at his receipts so I did the same. I was like, I don't remember anything being that amount - then I figured it out. It's funny b/c I was going to buy the store brand TP like I usually do then I noticed that it was 20 cents more than the store brand recycled brand so I went with the recycled. I wanted to save 20 cents and ended up saving almost $7!!!
I didn't even know about this store policy until I met my DF. But, I don't know if the policy includes only items up to a certain amt. I don't think it does b/c once DF was overcharged for a bottle of olive oil and got it free. Olive oil is expensive, and I"m sure it was over $10.
Like you, I often overlook those few cents of being overcharged, but I have just been like oh, well. Not anymore! I wonder how many ppl don't even know about this policy, and they could save if it happens to them!
Thats great news! Isnt' it amazing that little things like that can make your day! I once got charged for 7 packages of TP instead of 6 (there was a HUGE sale on so I was stockpiling, lol) I didn't catch it until I got home. When I went back the store was great. They gave me back money for two packages for the inconvenience.
Sometimes it pays to be on the ball!

Don't you just love that feeling?
I do major coupon clipping, and combine it with my store card for most of my grocery shopping.
