Stupid move on my part -- double payment

OK I really screwed up this time! I have been waiting for a big check to come from a client (a vent on this last week!) and it was going to cover the mortgage payment. Last week I tried to do an automatic bill pay out of my checking account for the mortgage payment to be paid today on the 16th, the last day of the grace period. The automated payment option said it would not let me post on a weekend so I made it for the 15th. For some unknown reason it did do go through (probably didn't hit the final submit button or something) so yesterday I decided I'd get stuck having to post it for Monday on the 18th.
Then I got to thinking about it and decided I would rather make a phone payment on the 16th and pay $15 than wait until the 18th and get zinged for like $80 in a late payment. I called Countrywide and of course couldn't get a real person on the phone on the weekend so I did it as an automated phone payment. Then when I tried to cancel the 18th payment with my bank they said, sorry, it's been in process since the 15th and they can't stop it. That is so aggravating because if they have already put through a payment for the 18th why the heck couldn't they have done one for the 16th?
That means I have now made two mortgage payments for this month, plus probably will still get charged a late payment plus the phone payment. Sheesh. I certainly cannot afford to make two payments at once (I had to use our overdraft protection to make one while still waiting to get paid). I can't get anyone on the phone on a Sturday and the chances of getting anything reversed after the fact are probably about zero. AAAAAARGH. I guess I can call them Monday and say I want the second payment to be used as a very early September payment. I'll just have to pay our overdraft account back with money for next month's mortgage when we get it between now and then. What a headache. I so hate all of this moving money around. I get confused. I will be so happy if/when we ever get to a point where I'm not so on the edge of disaster all the time. Jenny
