That's a really good point, Mary Ann, to always have cash on hand. And I think small bills would be best, fives and tens, maybe even singles. That way you would have the right amount to buy food and not have to worry about getting change if the cash drawers can't open.
We had very strong winds last night from the hurricanes way up here in Rochester, NY (on the south side of Lake Ontario). Thousands lost power during the night and some are still without it tonight. Those were powerful hurricanes!
I could hardly believe the devastation in Galveston on the news tonight. Those folks won't be able to go home for a month and some have no home to go back to. The Red Cross disaster fund is out of money because of all the disasters this year. I plan to make a donation on Thursday, when I get paid.
Yeah, I'm in Dayton, OH and it's been a huge mess here too. Restaurants & fast food places aren't open. Gas stations aren't open. Banks aren't open. ATMs aren't working. Although, it's more hit and miss here. Some parts of the city have power, others don't. Heck, in my neighborhood, one side of the street has power and one side still doesn't. We live on the lucky side, I guess.
Great advice about getting a cell phone charger for your car. Luckily, we already had one, as we needed to use it.
My parents always made sure to have cash on hand around the house. My father felt $500 should be enough, but my mother (who, like Dad, lived through the Great Depression) must have felt she needed more. After she died last year, my father found over $1500 squirreled away in drawers around the house! It brought tears to his eyes that after so many years of being comfortably well off, she still felt insecure financially and needed to hide money to feel secure.
But it's a good lesson, and I'm going to make sure we have $1000 around the house. As someone else said, preferably including a decent amount of $10s, $5s, and $1s.

Ouch, Mary Ann, I had no idea it caused so much damage in Kentucky.

Glad you are ok. I can only imagine how scary that would be.
Good reminder to have cash on hand. I'll start to squirrel some away.
Thanks for the timely reminder, Mary Ann.
