I just wanted to give you some virtual (((HUGS))). You sound like you are in a rough spot and I feel your pain. I am 27, live on my own, work for the government and am trying to pay down debt too!! I am not sure what advice I can give you (its hard without numbers) but I can tell you its possible . . . not easy but possible.

Have you called your creditors to explain the situation and see what can be done. They could lower interest rates or perhaps accept reduced payments for a while until you get back on your feet.

Have you checked to see if you have the absolute cheapest insurance/phone/anything else possible. Food is always an area to target. Some of the ladies on this site sweat by Angel Food ministries.

What about getting a roommate? Thats what I did to help dig me out of my credit card hole. It can be hard having to share a house, but its helped me speed up my debt free date significantly.

You said you spoke to a financial person, but what about a credit counsellor? I can understand not wanting to file bankruptcy, but I wouldn't count it out. I don't think you have to pay back the full amount, just what you can afford (I may be wrong since I am from Canada- Hopefully Carolyn our bankruptcy expert sees this and will confrim or correct me). If you feel comfortable, post your numbers. The ladies are great at finding ways to save money!!

Finally, take care of yourself. Don't feel ashamed or embarrased. You are not a bad person. You are a hard worker in bad situation. Post often and let us know how you are doing!

You are very young So if you did the bankruptcy thing you could rebuild your credit and get back on your feet before you hit the big 40 mark.
