Wondering if anyone is considering changing their priorities in light of economic news.

We have sort of changed strategy to become a little more liquid as well.

Well, I had been reading CraigsList every now and again looking for a part time job or a roommate. I found a listing for someone looking for a room and she is coming to meet me and see the space tomorrow afternoon. Sounds like a reasonably good choice. She has a couple of jobs and a boyfriend she hangs out with a lot at his place apparently so it might be a good situation where she isn't here too much. I haven't committed yet and she may decide the room is too small or whatever. I am trying to convince myself that it is a good idea. It would be good financially. I would probably put most of it into savings for now until things feel better in the economy and I'm thinking that I would allow myself to save a portion to spend on things I want for the house (art, bookshelves, window coverings) that I have been unable to justify spending money on. That way I'd be getting something out of the deal in the short run. I would have a safety net in case I lost my job because her rent would cover all the utilities and my HOA dues.

Also been thinking about developing myself to be able to do respite child care for special needs children. I'm still not sure about that idea but am brewing the idea. I like the idea that it is totally outside my current field (and therefore spreading my income eggs into more baskets), it would be very flexible and I'd likely be providing a much needed service for families struggling to get time away. I'm not as thrilled about giving up a lot of my weekend time most likely and I'm sort of concerned about liability and if I'd make enough to justify giving up my time. I have some contacts in a local autism group that I might try to have a informational chat with sometime after the holidays about this idea.

Anyone else employing any new strategies?

"This economic storm is very unnerving because you don't know how rough it's going to get.

I think the roommate idea would be great, providing you could get somebody mature and congenial who is considerate about sharing space.

Well, I pulled the trigger this week and invited the new roomie to take up residence around the first of the year.

Good for you, Peg. I hope the roomie works out well for you.

I'm tired of seeing my 401k decline too. . . though I figure I have 20 years before I get to use it anyway, and the odds are good it will be worth substantially more if I just hang in there. On the other hand, I did tell my financial advisor not to bother coming to see me til spring - I'm going to be stashing my non-401k savings in CDs and savings accounts til then.
