debt collection question

Hi Ladies,
I just want to confirm that I did the right thing.
Back in the summer, I posted about a debt colelction attorney who had contacted me about a written-off debt in January. Long story short, I started making payments. I didn't even think of challenging, making sure his client was actually owed, etc. I checked my credit this summer and (this is when I found y'all) and realized that, though I was making payments every month (and, because of that, only able to make the minimums on my other CC) they were reporting me to the credit bureaus as not making payments at all! keep in mind, I've paid off half what I owed, from January-July.
I got very frustrated, and contacted the law office to ask them to please send me all documentation- that I owed the money, that I was being credited the money, that their client would cease to mis-report me as not making payments, that they were making payments to their client, and that I would be reported to the credit bureaus as having paid in full. I said I would not make another payment until I received such paperwork. They never sent me anything.
Today, I got an email (my preferred form of communication) from someone else in the office about my "missing" August and September payments. I sent her the same request. Her response? Your payments are being credited in our files. She also said that she'd get me that paperwork.
Any advice? Should I make the payments, or just save the money for now, so if they send the paperwork, I'll send them the payments, and if not, use it for my CC that's not mistakenly reporting me to the agency?
When I realized that I owed the money, I called the bank and tried to make a payment, and the bank said they couldn't take my money cause they'd sold the debt. (it was a mixup; I had scheduled a payment plan with the bank and switched accounts, forgot I had that payment plan, and they NEVER ONCE contacted me about my missing payments. What can I say, my finances are a mess).

My good wishes are with you that you get it all worked out You just might have to go to the place and stand in front of someones desk until they give you the paperwork

Anyone think I need to go ahead and pay while waiting for the paperwork?
Basically, my feeling is I have been paying and I didn't even know if it was going to the right place (i.e. the debt) or if someone is going to come after me again for the same thing. Granted, I will have already lost 2,000 but I can at least save the other 2,000.
Right?
