Getting DS baptized

I'm really kicking myself now. We intended to have DS baptized months ago, but we put it off. We want to get it done before he gets any older, but that involves a lot of expenses. There's the traditional outfit and the lunch afterward. It doesn't have to be anything extravagant, but we want our family to be there for it and that means spending some money we don't have. I need to figure out how to do it without adding to our debt. And then there's Christmas. That's an entirely different subject. This time of year is expensive enough without adding an expense that we should have dealt with when we still had some money. :(

Amy,

Sorry if I am out of line, but getting your son baptized is about introducing him as a child into God's Kingdom and money shouldn't be a reason not to do this.

You're absolutely right that it's about the baptism itself, but we still want to do something. I can definitely ask people to bring something and I can probably do it fairly inexpensively. I was just looking for frugal ideas. I'm mad at myself for already putting it off this long.

I think you are incredible to be such a good mom to 3 small kids and I am sure that others think so, too.

check out a children's consignment store for a dress. Or even better get some really nice white cotton and a couple of yards of simple lace and make him one. Then he will have something to pass down to his children's one day. Doing it your self will not cost you much.

I actually have a gorgeous dress that my girls wore, but DH thinks it's too girly for a boy to wear. Insert eye roll here. You can't really see the detail, but it is pretty lacy.

Maybe if I point out to him how much a new outfit would cost he would reconsider.

We go to a tiny church and it's done during the regular service, so I don't really have a choice of time, but church is at 10:00, so I think I'm just going to do a brunch after the baptism. It would be a lot less expensive and I can have my mom bring her yummy apple cake and if I ask MIL and SIL to bring something (and maybe a couple of aunts) I could have a pretty good spread for not much money.

The baptismal gowns are usually for a boy or girl.

I got out the gown and tried it on DS this morning. I didn't think it looked too bad. DH insisted that he's NOT wearing that! He kept saying "It's a dress." I asked him if he knew how much those outfits cost and he said we could borrow the one his cousin wore. I have a gift card and a couple of things I think I can return to JCPenney for store credit, so if we can find something there that we can agree on we might be able to get something that's not too expensive, or we can see if we can borrow the one my cousin's DS wore.

I agree with your husband, It's a dress. LOL

I've seen batisism(sp?) outfits for boys. They are shorts.

Good luck in finding something inexpensive.
