Joining this group is a great first step.

I am also learning why I spend what I do and on the things I do. I checked out a book at my local library (good start there I borrowed it instead of buying it)
"Buried in treasures : help for compulsive acquiring, saving, and hoarding / David F. Tolin, Randy O. Frost, Gail Steketee."

It is more for the packrat type, but it does help explain why we purchase/spend in the way we do.
I have been much better when I go shopping now, I don't buy it just because it looks like something I could use or because it is on a great sale. If I can't use it then even paying a dollar is too much. And I can use that dollar to snowflake a credit card bill.

First do you use Quicken or money on your computer for keeping track of your checking account, bills and so on.

Read your credit card statement all of it and learn what interest rate you are being charged and also your closing date and due dates. What it will cost you if you are late.

Learn to budget your money. Learn the difference between I want and I need things. learn to make list for food and other things. If you are a working lady exam your clothing. Put outfits together and see what is missing and what you have.

Welcome to the board! This is a good place to vent, triumph and learn.

Have you ever tried writing down in a notebook what you spend, how much, dates etc? I mean every dollar--Keep all your receipts. You would be amazed at how helpful this can be and also a self check if you will. If you know you have to write it down in the book.....do you really need to buy it?

You can do this! And I bet you will learn some things here you can use for the rest of your life.
