I was back at work today for the first time since the big layoff 2 weks ago, and the place was quiet because half the place was still on vacation or working from home anyway....but some of the empty desks of former coworkers made me sad.

Oh, oh, oh, I want time off too! At least this weekend I have an X-Mas party and a wedding. We have to give a monetary gift but I had that in budget a long time ago because we have been planning on going to this for a long time. But time off would be soooo nice. My house is dirty, I need to vacuum and dust and clean the bathroom etc. Ho hum....I will get to it eventually!

I hate it when I see people driving new cars or getting new furniture and toys. If I know them, I usually know they can't afford it. "Afford it" is such a subjective term for some people. Only the people living in the real world knows what the true definition is. I drive a 94 pick up truck that had its motor redone. I love it!!

But "afford" IS a subjective term! People have different priorities, and we have no way of knowing what anyone can truly "afford." Some people will say "I can't afford it" when what they mean is "that is not my priority," while some people will say "I can afford it" when they do have the cash to spend but saving it would be wiser.

Also, you can't tell anything, really, about a person by their possessions. We just *think* we can, LOL! DH and I paid off over $100,000 in debt by April of this year, and then spent a lot of money (all cash) on a European vacation with our family, a new SUV, furniture, and a bunch of other things. We had our reasons, but I certainly didn't share them with anyone. I'm sure there were people among our family and friends who thought "oh they can't afford it" or else "oh they must be rolling in money," and neither is actually true. Because, really, can they see my bank accounts and 401k? Do they know what my projected income is? That's my business, not theirs.

There's nothing particularly virtuous about being either poor OR well off. I've been both, though I prefer well-off. ;)
