Lost my job today!
| Fri, 12-12-2008 - 9:32pm |
Oh dear God. I lost my job today. I have never been let go from a job before. I am so stunned and upset. Where do I start? I have $500 in an emergency fund but that won't begin to cover anything. My debts are so high and I am shaking. I have not even begin to fathom that I do not have a job. I can get unemployment and I know my family would help but they would be shocked by the amount of cc debt I have. I live in a small town and jobs are few and far between. Please any advice would help. Thanks for listening.

WOW- So sorry to hear this...these times are so scary right now and none of us know if we're safe. I don't think I have any advice because I've never been in that position, but I can understand how shocked and overwhelmed you must be right now.

Wow.
$500 beats $0, so that's a help.
Goal #1:
I learned MT so that I'd never be out of work and could work at home. It's the best decision I ever made. Relax. You are stressed. You will think more clearly if you are more relaxed. If you can't pay your cc bills, don't. If you can get help paying them from family, ask for help. Plan to go on unemployment for a few months. Use this time to think creatively rather than stressfully.
Ideas:
-Put up ads for housecleaning jobs. You can charge $15-$20 an hour or $60-$80 per house.
-Look for Nanny positions.
-Not sure if you are single, if you are, is it an option to be a live in Nanny and store your stuff in a storage unit?
-Should you consider scaling down on where you live? Do you rent? If so, should you consider a smaller or less expensive place?
-Can your bring in a roommate for a year to help w/ expenses?
-Can you use this time to learn a new skill and start a different career path? I live in a small town of under 6,000 and there are NO jobs here. However, that doesn't affect me. I get to live in a wonderful little small town, low crime, and low cost of living because I do MT and can work for a company 10 states away.
I know you are frightened but many times a lost job can be a blessing in disguise to move you in a whole different direction with your life.
Fast jobs one can get right away in most areas:
-Telemarketing. If you are good at it, the pay can be great for part-time. I've done this when between jobs.
-House cleaning jobs on your own.
-Certified nursing assistant...some places offer the training and pay you while you train. It's HARD back breaking work, but it is a fast train and nearly everywhere has nursing homes that are hiring. It could be temporary.
-I'm not saying that you "would" do this type of work or would even "want" to but it's legal and I've done it when in a pinch- the adult lines are always hiring. The pay is outstanding and you can do it from home and be and going w/i a week or so.
Good luck to you.
