Merry Christmas to me!

Hi all! This is a little OT but pretty cool and frankly, unbelievable. I have an assignment from an editor who wanted me to take some photo test shots. I said I had a digital camera but it wasn't very good. He said, "Oh, just go out and buy yourself a new one and expense it." I bought my husband a digital camera for Christmas already (wrapped and under the tree) but really wanted one of my own. I just couldn't justify the expense. Hohoho!

Also, went to the unemployment office today and chatted with the woman at reception. I told her how specialized my field was and that there were no jobs in it. She suggested something I had never thought of. She said they were in desperate need of teaching English as a second language in the school districts here and with my background they would probably give me emergency certification. Anyone knows what that pays? I am still trying to write but thought it would be nice to have a little steady money on the side.

Hi Jenny,

I am an ESL teacher. In Canada decent pay for ESL runs between $18-30 per hour. I am fortunate enough to be in the high end of it, but I am a substitute teacher (by choice). If you find a unionized school you can do fairly well. If you also have other things (your photography) that you want time for, being a substitute or contract teacher can be a great thing!

Good luck!

Jenny:

You'd be on a teacher's contract if that worked out for you, with all the benefits that go with it (typically decent benefits and guaranteed income). In our district, the ESL guy started out half time. As families with need moved into the towns we serve, he's moved up to full-time; but, in general, districts like having part-timers.

Good luck!
