Do you still use credit cards?

  • Yes, and I regularly buy stuff I shouldn't.
  • Yes, but just to get by (groceries, utilities, etc)
  • Yes, but I pay them off when the bill arrives.
  • Occasionally.
  • Rarely.
  • I don't have open credit cards.
  • I have them but don't use them.
  • Other.

I voted other. I have three bills that automatically get paid on my CC, mainly because I had to set it up this way or pay a huge deposit that I didn't have at the time. This month I have put my CC in my drawer and haven't used it! I am so excited! I am starting to see progress!!

Well, I still put most of my puchases on credit card, and pay them off when the bill comes in. Prior to last year, this has never presented a problem for me. However, since getting serious about paying off debt and paying more attention to finances, I realize that by doing this I am living a month behind. I would like to get ahead and consequently stop using the credit cards. But right now I just don't feel like I am there. But, hopefully further down the road I will, and it will feel right to get rid of them.

I have a Costco / American Express card that pays me back 2% on every purchase. For five years now, I have put all my christmas presents (about $600 this year), my car repairs (this was a bad month for that!), all groceries and dry goods buys, etc. on that card and I enjoy a little bonus every new year. The card does have a fee but I make back a lot more from the 2%.

Great question!

I, too, have a "cash back" card (2%) so I use it for gas, groceries, etc.

I don't think being a month behind matters, as long as you're within your budget. For example, if you're spending the same amount on gas as you would otherwise but using a credit card to speed things up at the pump, there's no difference. If your average gas expense is $200/month, it doesn't matter whether that month is December or January, does it?

I keep a mental tally, or look at the receipts, for things that are discretionary, such as clothes. I kind of know when I'll have to shop for the next season's clothes for my kids, and when DH is going to buy his; I work my spending around that and try to keep it all in line with the monthly average amount.
