I agree. I like being able to look at my spreadsheet and see where things are! The only issue I have is that I get paid biweekly rather then set days, so every week different bills need to be paid. I have gotten around this by using my calendar and tracking when all the bills are due and then figuring out which need to be paid with each pay. Sometimes it works out nicely, but some times (generally right before a 3 pay month) I end up with $600 extra on one pay and short $600 on the next so I have to remember to keep it and not spend it, lol!

Mary Ann,

I am in the second month of tracking my spending in an Excel spreadsheet. It's pretty basic (and not as accurate) compared to using Quicken, but I am using it to get a general idea of what I am spending each month.

I am dividing up the receipts into amounts for different categories in order to make my spreadsheet more accurate for me. If the Walgreen's receipt was mine, I would split it into Pharmacy, Clothing and Miscellaneous.

I am not tracking *how* I pay for stuff, so I throw the receipt away, but for your sake I would keep each receipt and save them in envelopes for each different credit card, then you have all the receipts to match up to the statements each month because you aren't going to be able to do it from the split up totals in Quicken. I would also staple all the receipts to the monthly credit card statements once you have matched them all up. Then you have the store receipt if you ever need to return anything.

Give yourself a big pat on the back. You are a big inspiration to a lot of people here.

I want to thank everyone for all the postings and support you have given me. I am going to try a few more things that you all have posted and see what happens. Sometimes old dogs can learn a few simple tricks.
