Being in sales, which is a lot like being self employed, I see him laying in bed every morning until 7:00 - 7:30, I'd love just for once in his life for him to have to punch a time clock.

We used to REALLY be like that. DH was paid hourly and w/ the overtime pay we'd have up to a $600 swing in the check from week to week ($600 less w/o overtime, $600 more with a lot of overtime) and then he did side work to cover the rest of the bills. I didn't start "working" until spring 2008, so the decade-plus before then had him responsible for the bills ... alone.

Now we're sort of like that. He was promoted to service manager and is on salary, so I can count on a certain amount from there, but we still need a little bit of side work from him. I make $1500-$2000/mo from home (in between homeschooling 5 kids and apparently NOT cleaning) which pretty much means he doesn't have to do side work, but he doesn't turn it down when he gets it. Since between the two of us we can make it without the crunch, I'm pretty much at "real budget" status, but I have years of what you're going through in the not-too-distant past.

To get around it, here's what I did. I made a list of the bills separate from my budget and included all expenses on it with due dates. (Sports registration for the kids, a birthday gift to buy, etc). If something HAD to be paid, I'd highlight it. If it was just due, it was just there. Then when we had money, I'd take care of the stuff that HAD to be paid "or else" (mortgage, stuff they can cut off or take away) and that left the stuff that I had some flexibility with. If the electric bill could be a week late, then it could be a week late. If I had a disconnect notice, then that sucker was highlighted so we didn't miss that!

However haphazard, the system worked for us for a long time. Never had anything cut off or taken away, LOL.

Hi Norma,

I can so relate! I leave for work a few minutes before 7:00 a.m., and my husband has at least started, after I complained about his late rising, to sit up on his side of the bed when I leave. He has held sales positions or has been self-employed all his life, and he sees nothing wrong with leaving the house at 9:00 a.m. I don't really see a problem with this if he can make equivalent money, which he doesn't. As in so many things, you get what you pay for. :(

Just my $.02.
