New Year's Goals/ Resolutions

I haven't really posted on here since my intro, but I feel very good about what the new year has in store (because I know that it is up to me to control what happens, and now I am sure I can).

I don't usually make New Year's resolutions, but I thought this year I would make some goals.

Yes I agree that banks don't care about you, and in fact I hate the bank I am with, however, in NZ we have about 5 or 6 big banks, and the ones I can get a good interest rate with are ones whom people I have talked to have had terrible experiences with.

I was hoping someone would start a New Year's thread. I've been thinking about 2009 and what I need to do financially as well as physically and emotionally.

My financial goals for 2009:

1. Develop a budget the whole family can stick to, which will include enough leeway so CCs won't be necessary.

2. Build up my efund again to $1000.00.

3. Pay off the CC debt we recently built up.

On another note, I need to start exercising again and find ways to take care of ME. I'm planning to start yoga and/or pilates until the snow recedes a little, go to the library and take out some books that I would never buy, and spend some time sewing and knitting and other things I enjoy.

Hi Kate,

I just wanted to say that a slow cooker can be your best friend!! You can pick up cheap ones this time of year for $20-$50. The web is full of slow cooker recipes! There is enough in each recipe to make a dinner for two and lunches for two for the next day! I usually prepare the ingredients the night before and it only takes 5 minutes to throw everything together!

I am was a single female who now has a BF. When it was just me I was spending about $50 a week for food (we are now closer to $125 cause BF is a 6'3 210 lb endurance athlete who sometimes needs to consume 5000 cal a day to maintain his weight!!!)

Here are two of my favourite recipes

1) Slow cooker chicken: Food basics sells 2 whole chickens for $10 (Costco is another good place to go for these if you have a membership). 1 is perfect for a dinner for BF and I and there is enough for Lunches the next day. In the morning, put baby potatoes (or peeled potatoes) carrots and onions in the bottom of the SC. Place chicken

Groceries! I have a family of 5 and we spend about 125-150 a week. My mom just buys food for herself and she spends about 90 dollars a week, but she buys extreme health = expensive food. All organic and strange items you only find at healthfood stores. I think you should be able to get by only spending 100 dollars a week for the both of you. What do you typically buy? I know you said that you don't like to cook, but what meals are you cooking and maybe there's a cheaper way.

I started buying in bulk. This probably won't work for you, but in some cases it would. Do you drink a lot of sodas or water or any kind of drink in a bottle? Every 3-4 weeks my grocery store has a sale on seltzer water. You can buy 4 packages for 10 dollars. This saves about .50 cents per package, so I save 2 dollars by buying in bulk and then I have enough seltzer water to last me until the next sale. Every drink goes through a sale cycle.

We also don't eat a lot of meat. Meat is expensive. I buy ground turkey when it goes on sale. Sometimes you can buy one package, get one free. I, then buy 4 packages. Split them all in half because no meal I make takes a whole package of ground turkey and viola! I have 8 servings of meat...good for 8 meals. I freeze them for later use. What I make with ground turkey...I make chilli. Super easy: here's my recipe

1/2 a pound of ground turkey or beef (cook it in a pan, drain off the fat...buying the fattier cuts of meat is cheaper)

Season the meat with a tablespoon of Cumin and a sprinkling of cayenne pepper, salt and pepper (or just use taco seasoning that you can find in the spices aisle for like .99 cents)

Add a couple small cans of V-8 juice. I usually use the low sodium kind (this is the secret ingredient)

Add a jar of salsa

Add a can of kidney beans

Let it simmer for awhile. If it gets too thick, add more V-8 juice

I usually make cornbread to go with this, but you can buy a thing of cornbread at the store. This

My advice Kate would be to take a cooking class at your local community college.
