question on saving receipts

Hello Everyone:

I just read an article (I think it was on unclutterer.com) about having a minimalist workspace. He said that he never prints out anything. He reads and stores everything online. Now, my eyes are getting too tired to do that for things that I need to read and/or edit; but, I'm wondering if I need to save all my receipts after I pay for something.

I currently have 7 plastic folders that have 13 slots in each. When I pay bills, I put the paid receipt in there, according to month. At the end of the year, I put my tax return in the back. This way, I have all my paid receipts

There are other reasons to keep receipts than income tax purposes.

The receipts I keep are generally after I've made credit card payments as well as utility payments. I don't save receipts from the grocery store or gas or anything like that; but, I'm with you. I also have everything deducted from my bank account, either via debit card or check. I have everything in Mint.com and that way I can see exactly what I've spent.

I do think I'll weed down my receipts, as I said in an earlier post. There's something very interesting about looking over previous receipts.

Since you don't save receipts, do you print out statements from the bank or do you trust that to remain electronic as well? I'd love to have less paper in my life!

Danni:

What paper do you keep? Tax returns, insurance policies, bank statements?

I am not very good at saving receipts. But I have decided to do that tracking thing everyone talks about for a month or two. I really don't buy much!! groceries, clothes if I absolutely have to and some things for kids but not much. I have a receipt file folder in my filing cabinet with all my other files with the year on it. If I can claim it on my taxes, it goes in the tax file folder of the appropriate year.

Hey Dee......I want to lose 10lbs too. What is your strategy going to be?

I keep receipts for major purchases that are under warranty.

You made me chuckle about the 10 pounds... Are you saying I can't just wish it off?

I do need to come up with a strategy. For now, it's just increasing my activity level in any way I can (parking farther from the door and walking, that sort of thing). When I get into my "funk" on the weekend and want to sit and write on the computer all day, I get cleaning and physically moving things. I need to limit the time I sit on my bottom. I only started a few days ago, but that has helped me feel more energetic and is helping me feel more optimistic with my surroundings, so two benefits there. I also started little things, like putting salad dressing on the side instead of all over and watching what I'm eating. Soon, I plan to start doing yoga and pilates again (I have some great DVDs) and, when the weather is nicer, start jogging again. It's hard to take off those few 10 pounds, but I know I need to do this. I haven't felt right since I gained the weight and most of my clothes just don't fit right, like I'm between sizes or something.

Do you have a strategy?

Dee

My only strategy on right now is stop eating whatever I can get my hands on. I have started walking outside but it has been very cold here. I bundle up pretty good but if it is windy it doesn't seem to matter. I don't know where you live but I live in southern Canada and it has been around minus 35 celcius. I don't know what that is in farenheit(sp?) but damn cold I assure you. Getting off my butt more seems like a good idea. Good luck!
