Proposed Stimulus Package

Hey all, hope everyone is well!

There is much talk recently about the next Stimulus Package. President Elect Obama has said he would like to see something from Congress within two weeks of him being in office. Part of this stimulus package is a proposal, similar to the last stimulus in 2008, that each taxpayer receive a check. Of course the hope is to get the economy going.

So, since this is a debt support

Unless this is a new package, it's not true that "every" tax payer will recieve a check. We are in the highest tax bracket so that voids us from getting a stimulus check. Why? Half of my husband's income goes to taxes. Why shouldn't we get a check too? Why NOT make it "every" tax payer. Why should we be penalized for making a higher income? I do not think it is fair at all. We have debt, too.

I'm dead set against government spending to try to stimulate the economy. A true stimulus to the economy would be tax cuts for everyone, including businesses. The problem right now is that the government still has the mindset that they need to get people spending again. That's what got us into this mess in the first place and that mindset will only make things worse in the long run. We are going through a restructuring and it's not going to be easy. People are going to have to feel some pain before it's over. Until the people in this country learn to spend less than they make, pay cash for the things they do buy, and save a percentage of their income, we'll have nothing but the same problems over and over again.

Having said that, if we do get a check, it's going the same place the last one went..in the savings.

I'm not really for another stimulus either...our gov't does not seem to address the real issues that we face.

But, if we do get another stimulus payment, we will be putting it in saving towards our down payment fund.

I'm happy someone started this post. I've been wondering about this too.

I'm still not certain that we'd get a stimulus check. It seems it will go to infrastructure, which is where I think it should go. Roads do need repaired, bridges need built or maintained, etc. This also helps with employment, so I'm all for that. I'd love to see major investment toward wind and solar energy too.

If we do get a check in the mail, we'd use it towards home improvement. We've been adding replacement windows one or two at a time and it has made a tremendous difference in the amount of oil we're burning. The house is so much quieter with the new windows, too, plus they just look better inside and out. We'd like to purchase 6 more before summer to finish the 2nd floor so that is probably where our tax return will go (if we get one...knock on wood!).

The report I heard this morning was talking about $500 per worker and this would be in addition to stimulus spending that has been discussed in the past weeks for the roads/infrastructure.

The last one went to home repair here.

I may have misunderstood the message on the news, but I thought that the stimulus to the middle class was a payroll tax deduction of $1000 per couple or $500 per individual.

I had also read yesterday it would be in the form of some sort of payroll tax deduction or something similar.

I was just reading an article about it and it sounds like it will be a tax cut for individuals that will come out to about $10 a week. I'll take what I can get, but $10 a week will barely be noticeable. I'd much rather get it as a lump sum, but it's probably easier for the government to just take in less money than it is to come up with $500 cash per person.
