DH just got let go from his part time job last weekend.

That put us just barely making paycheck-to-paycheck.

Today he found out that his FULL TIME job is closing its doors at the end of February.

Not only is that our MAIN source of income, it is our health insurance! I am 3 months pregnant and not really sure how you have a baby with no health insurance!! :-(

I bring home roughly $1,000 / month.
Our bills (including paying a bit MORE than minimum payments on a couple debts) add up to just under $3,000 / month. So he needs to find something that will bring home about $2,000 / month PLUS health insurance - FAST! We live in Fort Wayne, Indiana, which is a decent-sized town, but there just aren't jobs here right now.

If you have any suggestions, I'm open-ears, but really I just wanted to vent. We were so hopeful in the New Year to start SAVING money, and then he just keeps losing jobs. blah

For your medical insurance is it possible for you to be able to continue to pay the premiums on it after your husbands job finishes? Some insurance companies allow you to continue to be covered for a time after your job has finished. Even if it was only for 6 months it would at least have you covered until the baby is born. I would call the insurance company direct and ask if they have a plan like that.

I'm sorry for the job troubles you are having. That is just not good. Good for you for having a positive attitude though, that will help you through this tough time. I often wish I had a better attitude at times,I get down. This is the right place for advice and venting. I often turn to this board for that and it lifts my spirits. Thanks again ladies!

I know a PP said this but I also reccomend applying for medicaid. In our state we have pregnancy medicaid that has a very high income limit and they pay for everything prenatal and birth related except a circumcision.

Oh No!!! I am so sorry! This is just awful! I really hope he finds a job fast. I went through my fist pregnancy with no insurance. This was 10 years ago, but I know that there are places that will give you prenatal care for free or discounted if you fill out the paperwork and qualify.

Here's a little background on the pregnancy. I was 19 and living with my parents. I didn't qualify for any kind of assistance. You would think I would, but I didn't. That's a whole story in itself of the ineptitude of the government! My mom payed for my prenatal care, which cost $3,000 dollars (1998). She was told by one of the midwives to go to planned parenthood to see if we could get cheaper care. We went there and she filled out the paperwork and the cost was exactly the same as the regular midwife care. So be careful that you don't get swindled somewhere. I applied for medicaid but I was declined because my parents made too much money. This advice probably won't help you at all, but I just want to assure you that there are places you can go to apply for free healthcare. After my baby was born, I was left with a 7,000 dollar medical bill. The epidural alone was 1300 dollars. I never would have got it if I would have known that! My grandmother gave me $5,000 dollars towards the bill and I payed $50 dollars a month for years after that until a charity came along and payed the last thousand dollars. Just my experience as a pregnant person without healthcare.

There's medicaid...you need a note from the doctor proving that your pregnant. We have a program in this state called healthy kids which will cover the baby right at birth. You can apply for WIC when you are pregnant and get help for foods like milk and cheese, cereal, tuna etc.

I don't know what else to say, but start applying for everything you can to help you out in the between time before DH finds a new job.

Hey there,

I live not far from you in Warsaw, IN.

Some things I know from this area: there is Hoosier healthwise that you can apply for after you lose your insurance. The $ guidelines are higher when you're pregnant and they consider the baby as a member of your household when they figure it out. They even pay for the circumcision if you have a boy! The baby could be covered under this program after birth and you would be too for up to 6 weeks after. This is the website that answers a few questions about it. http://www.in.gov/fssa/ompp/2544.htm

Also apply for food stamps to get you thru the tough times, that's what it's there for.

Angel Food is available in your area as well. The website is http://www.angelfoodministries.com They have a locator for the churches that have it. There are several in the Ft Wayne area. This program's been a lifesaver for my family! They take food stamps as well if you have those. There's no income requirement to participate!

If you haven't already signed up for WIC, do so. Not only does it help out with food for you, when the baby is born it can help with formula if bottlefed or more food for you if you decide to breastfeed. Website is: http://www.in.gov/isdh/19691.htm

I'm sure there are other programs in your area that can help out. In our town we have a place called Heartline that can give you maternity clothing, you earn vouchers to pay for Lamaze class if you want to go to that and even helps with formula and diapers during a tight month. I know there are food pantries as well.

If you want you can email me about this. My email is taxgirl2007@yahoo.com I had to look into this last year when my daughter was pregnant and I have also used some of these programs myself when I was pregnant.

As soon as dh job ends, apply for unemployment! There's a 2 week waiting period in this state and you have to apply online now.

Take care of yourself and the baby! :)

Thank you for all the suggestions.

I'll double-check the eligibility, but I don't think we will qualify for Medicaid/Hoosier Healthwise, etc.

However, we will likely qualify for WIC if he goes on unemployment, so that is a start.

I forget about Angel Food ministries, because we were vegetarian for two years and they didn't seem to offer a lot of healthy food like that! ha ha But now we are pretty open to eating a variety of foods, so I will check them out again. Thanks for the reminder.

So far today, we both went to work and made a little money. That's all we can do - take it one day at a time. :-) I am in no danger of losing my job, and hopefully he can keep his another few months.
