MIL had a heart attack last night

I don't know anything besides that at this point. My husbands mom had a minor heart attack last night. I don't know when or why they waited so long to call us. We didn't find out the news until noon today. I don't know what minor means as opposed to major, or even regular. Hopefully it means she will make a full recovery. She's still in the hospital today and they are running tests. She's only in her very early 50's. She's either 50 or 51. So I'm sure they are wondering how this could have happened. She's a lttle overweight. She seems to be healthy in all other areas. She is Spanish with that Puerto Rican diet of fried everything...but her favorite foods are shrimp with vegetables. My husband seems to be taking it OK but he's never had anything happen to a loved one. My dad had a stroke at 47 and it was very life altering and made me think of the fragility of life. As soon as DH gets home from work we will be driving down to find out more. They live a half hour away. She's a very private, shy person. She doesn't even open Christmas presents in front of people so I'm not sure how many people she wants to see her at the hospital. Another thing...what do I tell my kids. They don't know what happened yet, but they know something happened. They are extremely close with their Abuela and I don't want them to worry. They are 10 and 5. What can they understand?

I can't tell you what "minor" means to your ILs, but I would say yes, it means the Doctors do expect her to make a recovery.

I'm no doctor, but it's my understanding that heart attacks are caused by a blockage or some sort.

sit the kids down and tell them the truth but add that the doctors are helping her and she should be fine.

Kids understand more than you think so pp's are right. Keep it truthful and simple and all will be fine with the kids. If they still look concerned have them make a card for their grandmother and that will make them feel better.

With all the medical technology and drugs we have today, they will have her up and going in no time with diet and exercise recommendations. This is not as serious as it was even 10 years ago. We live in amazing times.

Thinking of you

My grandma had a heart attack in 2001 (or was it 2002? It's all such a blur now....). My kids were on the young side and I simply told them that great-grandma was very sick and in the hospital. I didn't go into too many details as they didn't need to hear a play by play of things. Keep it simple. Reassure them that the doctors are taking very good care of her. I never told my kids "She'll be ok" because I honestly didn't know if she would be ok. I simply said "She's very sick and in the hospital. The doctors will take very good care of her". End of story. They didn't ask a lot of questions and were sad that she was ill.

I'm very sorry about your mother in law. I hope she makes a full recovery!
