I feel your pain. I'm an independent contractor who works at home, and if it weren't for the deductions, we would owe a boat-ton in taxes. This year, we were bracing for a hit of $3400 in federal taxes alone. But after deductions, it looks like we're only going to owe $500 in fed & $300 in state. It's an expensive lesson to have to learn, but at least now you know for next year. I do my taxes through Turbo Tax Home & Business.
And just to let you know for next year, Turbo Tax Home & Business is VERY specific about deductions. You can't just deduct fluff things willy nilly. You're required to itemize each item with the date of purchase and model numbers (if applicable).
Make him a space somewhere in the house like a dinning room all he needs is a desk and a chair and a filing cabinet or something Even a shelf over the desk with a few baskets on it. That could be his office space. He doesn't have to sit there just has to have

Does your husband have any expenses that he can claim from his side job? Mileage? Gas, repairs, and maintenance on his vehicle? Cell phone? Anything?

Just a heads-up that "Office in Home" is one of the biggest "flag" forms for an audit.
