I got my AT&T bill in the mail today - and every month it makes me mad to see that I am paying them for a land line and then they have so many extra charges.

We're seriously considering switching our phone to VOIP through our cable company or Verizon FIOS. Either way we can get TV, internet and phone for about what we're paying for just TV and internet now. Maybe something like that would work for you?

Voice over IP. It's phone service using your cable lines. Vonage is another company that does it. From what I can tell, most cable companies are offering this service these days.

I won't drop my landine, either, but it only costs about $15/mo.

If you have Voice over IP - how do you get IP if you don't have phone service?

We got rid of our landline years ago, so I can answer some of those questions for you. Whenever I have a form where I need to put my phone number, I just put my cell number. I rarely get calls from businesses. I get calls from my mortgage and my Gap card when I'm late and that's about it. I've never had a problem going over my minutes from these calls because they are so rare. I think on a cell phone you get less 'junk' calls and I've been putting this number on forms for years. If a call comes up that I don't know, I just don't answer it and if it's really important, they leave a message. I've changed my thinking about my cell phone. It's my phone...I don't have a problem giving the number out. What I finally realized is that the only calls I actually got on my landline were soliciting calls, it was totally wasted money to pay for a landline. Now my mom hates the fact that I only use my cell phone because of the whole cancer thing. In the future, when I have some extra money, I may look into the voip service, but you do need highspeed internet in order to have voip. It's a special modem that hooks into your computer and your phone then hooks into the modem. You have to initially pay to get the modem, but after that the monthly fees are cheap and I believe it includes all the services like voicemail.

Just thought I would jump in here. VOIP is voice over internet protocol.

We have a basic landline because we have DirecTV and we have to have a landline (I can't *wait* for that requirement to go bye-bye). The only reason we have that landline is for the satellite, and we don't even have it plugged into a phone. We get DSL through the phone company as well, so we pay for Vonage as our actual phone service. We probably pay an extra $20/month with all the fees and such for the landline - it's annoying, but I wouldn't drop my DirecTV for cable, so it's the price of TV I enjoy.

I recently went on line with AT& T and lower my land line to a basic line, NO caller ID or Call waiting. Bill is about $15 a month.
