Collection accounts?

I just found out that some of DD's old medical bills that have gone to collections have shown up on DH's credit report. I'm feeling kind of ill about it. Now that they're on his credit and have hurt his credit score, how much will paying them off help us? I know we need to pay them because we're hoping to buy a house whenever we sell this one. I also read that medical bills that have gone to collections don't hurt your credit score that much. I'm just wondering if that needs to be a priority or if we can wait until some of our more expensive debt is paid down? It's not a huge amount of money so if paying it sooner will make any difference we can pay it soon. I would just prefer to put the money on the 28.99% Discover card. As long as it shows up as paid, does it matter when it's paid?
