I forgot to write down a check that I wrote. Well then I spent that money of course and a bill came through. I knew I was broke until payday on Fri but I thought I at least had $30 to my name.

Nope. I am $100 overdrawn on my account after fees and such! OMG! I have been sitting here crying (no it didn't help) and I feel sick!

Oh yeah and that emergency fund of $1000? I have been borrowing from it and have nothing left. Dumb Dumb Dumb!

Should I call the bank and tell them I will have the money for them on Friday? Do you think they will wait that long?

I can't believe I did this. I have been doing so well this past year and a half. I guess this means that I'll have to rework my budget this month to allott for that $100 dollars that will go into bank land.

I am so upset :(

Wish income tax season would hurry up and get here I need the money to put into savings!

I had something similar happen recently. We got slammed with 17 overdraft charges at $27 apiece. I was so upset. We called the credit union and since we don't have a history of that kind of thing they waived 9 of the 17 charges. It was still an expensive lesson, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. Definitely call your bank, explain what happened and ask them to waive the charges. It took 3 or 4 calls before they finally did it, but it was worth the effort. The worst they can do if you call is say no.

I think we have all had a similar incident...a missed check in our register or an error in our calculations.

Is this your local bank?

Call the bank and see if they will waive some of the fees. Sometimes they are allowed to waive some not all. I recently did the same thing, and I called them and they were nice enough to waive them. Good Luck.

Sorry to hear this happened Dana.

Call them and see what they can do. It can't hurt to try! Good luck!

Well I called the bank yesterday afternoon. Talked to a very understanding lady. She said those charges were "memos" and not set in stone yet. She told me to call back today and talk to her again after she talked to her supervisor about my account.

So yesterday when I got home I thought well lesson learned. Went to the mailbox and to my surprise my travel reimbursement check from work came in! It was $93 of the needed $106 dollars for the bank. I got back in the car, sped to the bank and deposited it.

I am getting ready to call the bank again and ask for that lady to see if that was enough. If they waive the overdraft fees I'll be ok, if they don't, well at least I'll only owe them around $13 at this point and that won't hurt my bill paying this month when my salary check gets deposited.

Thanks for all the positive thoughts - I needed them! At least I don't feel like crying anymore.

Hi Dana,

So glad you got that $93 check. Things always work out.

Let me tell you about something stupid that I did a few years ago. I would write down the checks in the register, but would only balance it like every month or two. Well, two pages got stuck together so when I did balance the book, I negleted to account for about 15 checks. Oh yes, I bounced checks all over the place. The bank called and told me there was a problem, I was thinking how can I be THAT short?? How embarrassing. Lesson learned.
