I'm seriously kicking myself

Our Citibank payment was due on Monday. I had it set up through Bill Pay at my CU. I didn't know exactly how much our minimum payment would be so I estimated $200. The actual minimum payment was $200.95. I never updated the payment amount when I got the bill so the CU made a payment of $200. I realized on Monday evening that I hadn't changed it. I immediately did an online payment (through Citibanl's website) for an additional $10 and had DH call them. It was already late by then, so I'm afraid that they'll slam us with a late fee and raise our interest rate. I had DH call them and the guy said to call back on the 1st (after the closing date) to see what they'll do for us. We *just* had them lower our interest rate, so I'm afraid that will all be lost. It was such a stupid mistake. I'm so mad at myself!

Argh I hate situations like this and I find myself in them more than I would like; we make our best effort and some random little thing can trip us up. For me recently it was knowing that my cell payment is due on the last day of the month but thinking the month had 31 days when it had 30 - so my payment got credited on the 1st and I got a late fee. Grrr.

Have you thought about giving them a call? Sometimes I find that they will cut some slack if you get a decent person on the phone and if they feel it was a genuine mistake and you have been paying on time.

Good luck.

Hi,

(Long time lurker, first time poster...)

I would call them and explain the situation. It is an honest mistake, and it is very easy for them to see that it is indeed the case. PLus, I had a positive experience with them couple of months ago when I had changed the bank account out of which my autopay payments were supposed to be taken, but for some reason, I did not do everything right, so they were still trying to take the money out of the old account (which I had closed by that point). So, they charged a late fee + returned payment fee (a total of 75 I think) and I was freaked out about them reporting me to the credit bureaus, etc. After I called, they waived all the fees, and I experienced no negative repercussions. Do call them, it might work out.

All the best, 'Fiesty

I forgot to change my username when I posted my original message. DH did call and they told him to call back after the 1st, which will be after the statement closes. I don't want to get charged a late fee, but I *really* don't want them to raise our interest rate that we *just* got lowered. Tomorrow is actually the closing date, so I'll have him call again on Saturday. As easy as it was to get our interest rate lowered, I'm wondering if they're more willing to work with customers because they're in such bad financial shape.

I'm hoping that they would forgive the ninety-five cents. I recently transferred my HOme Depot account to a zero percent Capital One, when they paid the bill there was six cents left on the home depot. So I tried to pay the 6 cents online and they don't accept payments that small! Well guess what happened, they charged me a late fee for the 6 cents!!! Can you believe it? I called them, they apologized and cleared out the late fee and the 6 cents. I can't believe these companies and the ba**s they have. Good Luck. I am sure if you call and explain they will forgive the 95 cent oversite. It's not like they didn't get anything at all.
