I don't want to spark an ethical debate here, but I'm just having such a difficult time reckoning with this.

I have to agree with you about the selfishness of mother of the recently born octuplets.

I am a mother, a working professional, a single parent, independent and consider myself a realist. Something tells me this woman isn't wrapped too tightly and her parents are enabling her. I'm not saying she is stupid (she does have a 4 year degree and is reported to have been working on a masters degree), but emotionally I sense she is about a 2 in Erikson's Stages of Development. Psychologically and emotionally I have my doubts. Her fertility physician is a separate matter. Maybe she can get a lucrative contract, sell her family for money like Kate and her Litter of 8 or maybe she'll keep going so she beats the Duggar Litter, get her own TV show and cash in. Given the facts as presented that may be her goal in life. Or she is seeking fame for uterine expansion world record. Maybe entry in Ripley's Believe It or Not! Maybe the voices in her head told her to do it. LOL!!!! Nothing would surprise me. But I simply can't wrap my mind around a single mother having 14 babies under the age of 10 because she decided she wanted 12 babies when she was a little girl. When I was a little girl I wanted to live in an igloo. Fortunately most of us grow up and have goals that are more mature and sensible.

I think that the situation is nuts, too...but I also don't think that she knowingly got pregnant with 8.

I don't have much to say about the kids except for a long, slow eyeroll.

The dog cloning makes me sad. I realize most people spend that money out of grief. I personally believe that the life experiences a dog has with its family shapes its disposition, attitude, personality.

I guess that's back to nature v. nurture, though. :)

When my husband and I did infertility treatments, my doctor REFUSED to continue a cycle if there were more than THREE ***FOLLICLES***.

First of all, 3 is a lot less than EIGHT.

And FOLLICLES aren't even babies yet. Embryos are BABIES. They are already created, they just have to find a place to implant. The likelihood of all eight implanting is a little slim, but if you put eight embryos in, you are just about guaranteed to have the vast majority implant. She could EASILY have done a cycle of four embryos to see if it worked, and if none of them took, she could have implanted the other 4 the next month.

It was highly unethical of the doctor to even allow it. And I cannot even imagine the health problems those babies do/might have from being born like that.
