I haven't had an NSF in over 14 years, and those were only due to my exH and his carelessness during our marriage.

Same thing happened to me with Classmates.com. I signed up for a 3 month gold membership with them because if you signed up for 3 months, you got 50% off your hotel stay of more than 2 nights. Well, DH and I were going to Florida and were staying in a ritzy resort that was, OMG, listed as one of the hotels accepting the offer! It was worth the money I paid to Classmates.com to have the info I needed to get the hotel room for 50% off (we saved over $1200 by using them!). I emailed Classmates.com a few weeks before my membership was set to renew and canceled.

A few weeks later, I also overdrafted my account and couldn't figure out how. They had billed me for *2* years! I was livid. My bank eventually credited the money back to me and went after Classmates.com for the money. I'm assuming they got it since I never heard another word about it.

I hope your bank refunds the money!

With your overdraft protection - you only had to pay a $5.00 NSF?

I have overdraft protection on my chequing account. I don't get charged a flat fee when my account dips below what I have, I get charged interest on the balance that I'm overdrafted for the amount of time that it is in overdraft. IF for some horrible reason I happen to overdraw my overdraft they charge me $5 but don't return the cheque. So at least that way I don't get whacked with an NSF from whoever I wrote the cheque too. I deal with the Royal Bank. But I would guess that other banks would have something similar.

I'm glad it didn't cost you much. I've never signed up for Classmates because I've heard it's REALLY hard to cancel. I'm sorry it happened to you.

I have overdraft at my bank and it doesn't cost anything. If I ever need to use it, there is a fee of $10 and the interest rate is 5% of the "loan" value.

I don't intend to use it. Its there in case I ever eff up royally. I would rather pay $10 then a returned check fee!
