Well I am back from our mini-vacation, and boy am I proud of myself!!! We spent four days in New York and I spent a grand totaly of $120 on food, subway tokens and gas!! I didn't buy anything!! I had $200 to bring so I came home with money!!! That NEVER happens!!! By the time I converted all the money I had left (plus some extra BF gave me since I paid for all the gas) I had enough money to buy the running shoes I needed (lol turns out when you are planning your first half marathon, 5 year old shoes just don't cut it, lol). So wiht the conversion I was able to buy my shoes, take bf to an all you can eat sushi place and put another $5 in the efund! So excited!

Wow! I'm impressed. I love NYC but it's an expensive place to visit. Care to dish on where you went and how you spent so little on food. I'm going soon and would love any tips.

It was easy not to spend on food if you are NOT trying to keep to a diet, lol (Mine went out the window, but luckily with all the walking I did, it only meant one extra lb, lol)

Breakfast was included in the hotel price (which was only $35 a night for a Marriot since BF's sister works there so we got a family deal) so each morning we would eat a big breakfast to stuff ourselves before going out. I told the lady at the breakfast station where we were from and what we were trying to do (i.e. save money) so she gave me nutrigrain bars to put in my purse for snacks, lol. We also would fill our travel mugs with tea or coffee before leaving the hotel. BF was really excited about "street meat" so lunch was just something picked up whereever we were out and about. Usually a sausage or pizza. We always got it from side streets off the main drag and it was cheaper. Dinner was at little places outside the main drag. Our hotel was in Queens so we often would eat there (the all day subway pass was $7.50 and boy did we get our money out of that little baby). I have to say, New York Pizza is great!!! Instead of having dinner on Broadway we had dessert after. I still got to experience New York but didn't have to spend and arm and a leg to do it!

I was really glad to read your post - my daughter has been begging us to go to New York for a vacation (she is in college).

Granted we got a crazy deal because BF's sister works there. The manager did give us his card and direct number and told us to call if we wanted to come back, he would give us

Do people dress up really fancy to go to the theater shows?

Yup it was my first time. There wasn't much dressing up for the show (we saw the Phantom and its been around forever so this could be why). A lot of people were in Jeans. I was *blush*. Some men were in jackets and suits, but I didn't see an evening gown.

We spent most of our time walking around looking at different things. We did Times Square, Ground Zero, Battery Park, Staten Island and Canal st the first day. The second day we went back and did some more Canal st, and soho, and then went to the show. The third day was a right off because BF was so sick (he had a head cold the entire time we were there) so we didn't do much.

How exciting, I am so glad you had a great vacation and you sound as though you really enjoyed your time in NYC. NYC is my dream, I want so bad to see the Statue of Liberty live than on T.V. I want to go to the Today Show and see ground zero as well. I would love to see Phantom of the Opera and I want to go to the set of SNL. It sounds as though you got some great deals as well. Welcome back and great on the savings!
