Well I am back from our mini-vacation, and boy am I proud of myself!!! We spent four days in New York and I spent a grand totaly of $120 on food, subway tokens and gas!! I didn't buy anything!! I had $200 to bring so I came home with money!!! That NEVER happens!!! By the time I converted all the money I had left (plus some extra BF gave me since I paid for all the gas) I had enough money to buy the running shoes I needed (lol turns out when you are planning your first half marathon, 5 year old shoes just don't cut it, lol). So wiht the conversion I was able to buy my shoes, take bf to an all you can eat sushi place and put another $5 in the efund! So excited!

Hey I just got back from NYC too. We left the 11th and got back the 15th. We spent significantly more but we are a family of five. I used to live in Manhattan when I was young and single and so I knew some of the angles. Filling up on breakfast is one of my favorites. The corner grocers also have great prepared meals and salad bars. The trick is to stay in residential neighborhoods. We stayed in a rented condo on the Upper West Side we found on the internet. Vacation rentals are great for kiddos.

Cheap/Free stuff: The museum of natural history has only a suggested admission charge. I couldn't bring myself to pay nothing but I paid much less than the suggested fee. Check websites on Museum of Modern Art and Met. I think they have free days or also take whatever you are willing to pay. We took subways everywhere (tokens used to be $1, now they're $2 -- sigh) but the more you buy on your metro card the more you save. The other thing we did was take the Staten Island Ferry which is free so the kids could see the Statue of Liberty. I saw no reason to pay for a boat ride to the statue. I don't think you can even go up it anymore.

The absolutely coolest thing you can do in New York which is free is go to the taping of a live TV show. Take your pick, David Letterman, SNL, or any of a whole bunch of shows. We went to see the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. It was great fun. You just have to get on the website and request tickets. It is kind of a long process of getting there a couple hours early and standing in line until they let you in. But it's free and all part of the NY experience.
