Hi, I am a lurker, but I too am from Canada. I am in Regina, Saskatchewan. Right now there are tons of jobs here, people would not have a hard time finding a job here. I think the negative economy will eventually affect us, but it really hasn't yet. We had a housing boom here last year, and prices rose on houses here, but they have dropped a bit this year, and it is harder to sell your house right now. My sister is trying to sell her house, but they haven't even had one person look at it. People here are spending money, eating out, buying new cars etc. and no one seems to be too concerned about the economy around here.

I live in East Tennessee about 40 miles from Knoxville. I am originally from Alaska but moved here when my parents retired. My dad passed away 5 months after they got to Tennessee so I moved down to be with my mom. I am one of the millions that has lost my job. The town I live in is very small with a lot of factory jobs that are disappearing due to layoffs. Jobs here are few and far between. The housing market is slow. Houses range from $125,000 to $200,000. When I first moved here houses were only in the $75,000 range for a 3 bedroom ranch style. We have high sales tax though. It's 9.25%. That was hard to get used to coming from Alaska since we did not pay sales tax or a state income tax and of course every Alaskan gets a check from the state each year. This is from a fund set up to pay from the oil revenues. This year every man, woman, and child that qualified got a check for $3269.00. I miss those! Tennessee doesn't have a state income tax either. Grocery prices are going up too. I have even considered moving back to Alaska to look for work but that would mean leaving my family. The stress is really starting to get to me. I have put in a ton of applications and sent in resumes but no luck. Everyday is devoted to job searching in some shape or form. Hopefully, things will start to look up here.
