I went through a drive thru (yeah, I know, but under the circumstances it was the lesser of two evils) and the guy gave me back change for a $20 instead of change for a $10. By the time it hit me that one of the bills wasn't a $1, I was already out of line and giving the kids their stuff. It took 10 mins to get through the line the first time and I was SO not taking all five kids into the store to give it back. To make matters worse, I really don't like this guy. He's worked that window for YEARS and one time he broke apart our debit card. It was one of those mini cards (those are so stupid!) and DH kept it intact so he could use it in a gas pump. This guy takes the card, snaps it off the secondary piece, and tosses the "trash" in the trash can. Yeah, THANKS you freakin' HOLE. Anyway, needless to say this "found" $10 would have been nice, but I just couldn't keep it. So I sat through that endless line AGAIN just to tell the guy that he gave me change for a $20 instead of a $10 and handed him his $10 back. And you know what? They LAUGHED at me! Not the cashier himself, but a whole fraternity standing behind him. They were LAUGHING. I don't know if it was at me or at the cashier, but I'm just plain MAD at this point.

Anger, of course, better than guilt. But still, it really ticks me off.

If it makes you feel any better, what you said about this guy is freaking hilarious. I've been giggling at it for a couple of minutes. Those other employees were probably laughing at the cashier that gave you too much change. They are most likely aware of his "freakin' HOLE" status! You did the right thing, though keeping the $10 would've made his drawer come up $10 short and maybe you could've gotten even for the debit card fiasco~j/k......you did what was right. Every time I go through a drive thru, I always leave p*ssed off so I can't figure out why I'm so drawn to them.

This is one of those little sketches that illustrate your character when your kids are talking about you one day-- "mom was determined to give that money back."

And they wonder why they cannot get a better job?

You did the right thing in returning the extra money.

Kharma fairy willl probably call it a wash since you called the guy a "freakin' HOLE" for something that occurred

Honey - I only got two kids and this situation frustrates me. You are a good person for returning the money.

I hate being rushed through lines like that. Just like at the grocery store. They hand you the receipt and immediately start scanning the next persons stuff. I hardly have time to file things in my purse and I REFUSE to be unorganized in my wallet because I am being rushed. I always stand and finish my filing before moving on. I know people in line are annoyed as is the grocery clerk but my theory is that I spent good money there so the least I can do is spend 30 SECONDS getting organized.

Ok, sorry. Got on a rant there.

I'm not going to bed bitter every night over the card (DH carried it, for that matter -- not me) and he had no right to essentially destroy our personal property. I imagine that there are a very few saintly folks that wander around with nothing but goodness and light radiating from them, and for the record I didn't call the guy anything to his face. I didn't call him anything where the kids could hear me, or anything out loud at all -- nor did I mutter under my breath. I'm human, and doing that guy a favor gets a little harder with the history, however brief, that we have. I think that makes me very human. I gave the money back very kindly, without a condescending attitude toward him at all, and I came here to vent about it. I'm not sure why you have to turn it into me not being a good enough person because I saw the guy and remembered that he broke our card in half (not a technically accurate measurement, but broken all the same) or saying that I merely break even b/c I didn't do it the "right" way with nothing but goodness in my heart. The bottom line is that he got his money right back in his register and I gave him zero attitude about it. I thought this was a safe forum, but now I'm getting flack for doing the right thing the wrong way!

I'm sure I'm in the hole now with kharma since I'm not being utterly pleasant toward your response, but geez ... I don't see what warranted criticism from you for the way that I returned the money!

My 10yo DD said "Mom, I wish it wasn't stealing to keep it!" Oh, me too! Sigh.

That is incredible that you got your wallet back! Um, twice, LOL. You're right about one thing -- you really never know.

A few years ago we were having a TIGHT week financially and DH was an hourly employee so if he took time off it cut overtime which we REALLY felt. The neighbor was trying to finish the roof over his shed, fell, and broke his leg. Bad weather was moving in and he asked DH if he could help him out, and DH took the whole day off from work. Two days after that, days before payday for that short week, $600 literally came out of nowhere for us. We couldn't have expected it for anything. (Then the neighbor gave him a $50 gift card to Home Depot on top of it).
