I went through a drive thru (yeah, I know, but under the circumstances it was the lesser of two evils) and the guy gave me back change for a $20 instead of change for a $10. By the time it hit me that one of the bills wasn't a $1, I was already out of line and giving the kids their stuff. It took 10 mins to get through the line the first time and I was SO not taking all five kids into the store to give it back. To make matters worse, I really don't like this guy. He's worked that window for YEARS and one time he broke apart our debit card. It was one of those mini cards (those are so stupid!) and DH kept it intact so he could use it in a gas pump. This guy takes the card, snaps it off the secondary piece, and tosses the "trash" in the trash can. Yeah, THANKS you freakin' HOLE. Anyway, needless to say this "found" $10 would have been nice, but I just couldn't keep it. So I sat through that endless line AGAIN just to tell the guy that he gave me change for a $20 instead of a $10 and handed him his $10 back. And you know what? They LAUGHED at me! Not the cashier himself, but a whole fraternity standing behind him. They were LAUGHING. I don't know if it was at me or at the cashier, but I'm just plain MAD at this point.
Anger, of course, better than guilt. But still, it really ticks me off.

Oh you deserve more kharma than I would have gotten from the situation. I'm still laughing at the Hole thought! I'm litterally sitting here giggling in my store. We need more stuff like this on the board. That just made my day! LOL
You did more than do the right thing, you taught your children by example. I applaud you for that. And yes, Kharma will reward you for that.

I'm going to be real honest here and say that I don't think I would have returned it! Maybe I'm a horrible person but if this is Mcdonald's we're talking about and it probably is or the equivalent...they could afford it. That would be my reasoning! Then I'd think...Oh, maybe I was meant to get this extra money and I'm going to need it today. I am really stingy with money. I'm probably what you'd call a cheap skate! I definitely think my situation has created this awful part of my personality and I'm hoping that when I'm out of this money mess, I will return to the nice person that I'm supposed to be!
But good for you for returning it!!!
I woulda snatched the money back outta his hand and said "I'll be taking this.. as my tip for putting up with all the CRAP at this place!"
I had kind of a similar incident happen not that long ago - I was in the self check-out line at Wal-mart (I absolutely hate those things - I don't know why I go through them).
I wasn't criticizing you.
Wow, I am actually angry for you.

It seems like I should get more cosmic (karmic?) points for (a) giving the money back (b) getting back in line to do it, and a slow one no less (c) doing it in spite of my sordid history with this guy and (d) really, really needing the money that miraculously fell into my lap. 'Cause taking it would have been sooo wickedly easy! That should SO not be a wash! But the thing with karma (and I'm not a big karma person, but hey, I started it) is that you never know when the blessings come full circle. In fact, that delay at McD's might very well have saved me from a big accident further down the road. You never know. I just do the right thing, call the guy a HOLE (LOL) and get on with my life, guilt free.
I apologize if I over-reacted. Your response still feels a bit unsympathetic, but we've butted heads in the past so maybe I just took it the wrong way. I felt utterly ridiculed that I went through all of that trouble to give him the money back only to be told that it was negated by being annoyed by the whole thing, especially since I was making a joke of it to begin with.
That, and I just realized that I've spelled Karma wrong about ten times in the other posts. I won't blame that on you, though. =c)
