How do you break it down?
When you are spending log, how do you break down purchases? Say I went to Walmart and spent $120. Should I break that all down into the categories such as baby food, animal food, household or should I just put it under a general household expense category?
Hope this made some kind of sense.

I broke it down very narrowly, because I wanted to see where we were spending too much. I tracked our spending very carefully for a year.
Nowadays I lump things into a "groceries" line in the budget, but seeing where it actually was going was helpful before I was able to get to that point.

It depends how closely I'm tracking my spending. Often I'll just slot it all in under 'groceries', but if I'm taking the time to track my spending more closely, I will split it into food, toiletries, etc. Having said that, there are some items like magazines that I'm more cautious about purchasing at the supermarket because they are the expenses that build the grocery cost quickly and sneakily.
I think it boils down to making a decision on what you feel needs to be tracked closely.
