Karma Fairy Watching Part II

Remember awhile back there was a post hoping the Karma Fairy was watching a good deed? Well, I hope she is still on duty. Today I got a check for a freelance project. It was supposed to be $5K. Instead it was $8,885! I have no idea why. At first I thought they had mistakenly added in the amount they will owe me for the next project. But then I checked that contract and the numbers don't add up. As much as I would love, love, love that extra money and as tempted as I am to just keep my mouth shut I sent an email to the person who does invoices and told her. In truth I don't want to get her in trouble and I don't want to piss them off because I want to work for them again. I did, however, put it immediately in the bank so I can at least earn interest while they sort it out. Darn that honesty gene!

That sounds way to good to be true. Is this a new client of yours?

I was watching a show on tv the other night about people being paid too much money for some things and being asked to send the overage back by western union and then finding out that the cheque/money orders ere counterfeit. So they lost the amount of the cheque plus what they had sent by western union.

You did the right thing, though I know it hurts!

Thanks all! No they are not a new client, exactly. It is a big company that I did work for years ago. I think things are kind of in disarray there. I got an email from the woman I worked closely with just as I was finishing the project that she had been laid off. It's everywhere. The newspaper I briefly worked for and still know many people at closed its door yesterday. Two hundred thirty people out of work in a field that is not hiring anywhere. At the same time the newspaper my husband works for and the one that laid me off has demanded everyone take pretty substantial pay and benefit cuts. So this check came at the end of a very dark day.

Secret fantasy? The assistant to the woman laid off who does the checks is so mad at the company she tells me to just keep the money and then put in for my next assignment like nothing happened.

Oh well, it sure felt good this morning to pay bills and actually have the money to pay them (out of actual amount owed not the extra -- that I'm squirreling away in case I have to send it back).
