What would you do if...

...you lost your job?

And I don't mean cry or apply for unemployment, although those things would happen too. What I'm wondering is, if you didn't have the job you have and you could start over (or had to start over), do you have other interests you'd rather pursue?

For a while I thought if I lost my job it might be a relief. I could walk away from that and try a new challenge. Financially, it would be hard, but not impossible. But now that I'm not so sure what will be happening, I'm not so confident. I wish I had a back-up plan.

So...just day-dreaming a little...what would you do?

I would either do two things, the first I would stay at home with my daughter and then take classes to become a Ultrasound Tech. I do xray and mammograms now, and the only reason I got into that was because I wanted to do Ultrasounds but by the time I was done all the xray schooling I didn't want to go back and for financial reasons I couldn't go back. So that's what I would do.

Well my interests are books and scrapbooking. If that supported my family financially I would love to work at a scrapbook store. Maybe when my kids are older and I have my financial ducks in a row. I enjoy that hobby so much that I would love to share that with others. Right now, I am VERY thankful for my job and I do enjoy my work.

I've dwelled on this a little, because of my line of work.

After 5 years in insurance, 20 years in banking, and 5 years in construction/insurance restoration, I'd probably go where there is a ton of business right now.

They do say there are more entraprenuerial ideas during a recession than in good times, but there is not much data to substantiate, so I am circumspect on that statement being fact.

But if I did loose my job, I would start my own business, just as I did once before.

I have thought about this for lots of reasons. I own my own business so there is no EI. As a matter of fact it probably wouldn't take that much to go out of business at all. I would need to get a job asap! I have thought about the banking industry, human resources and insurance. This past year has been so stressful...it might be nice to work for someone else**get weekends off, holidays, sick days etc. I think we would be ok for a little while but not too long.....kinda scary!

IF I lost my job, I would try out my sewing business again, I was doing that a few years ago, but found that it was too time consuming with my job. I really enjoy my sewing and embroidery but find I'm too tired to do as much of it as I would like.

Plus I doubt if I would find another job like I have now. I am office manager for a local nonprofit society. I could also always go work for my in-laws if I really had to.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your job, Stacy, and hope you find something else you enjoy soon. I've been there and I know how stressful it is.

At the moment, I have every reason to believe my job is secure; but, one never knows. I want to have a plan well in advance. That's why I started this discussion.
