Makes me nervous, I admit, but I feel it's the right thing-- I'm gonna quit my job.

Wow! Good for you for making the decision. Most people (myself included *sigh*) are too afraid to do what they love for fear of the unknown. I HATE my job and would love to do something else, but I am too scared to try!

It will be an adjustment, but you have a supportive DH so I'm sure you can pull through!

Good luck!

That sounds like a well thought out reasonable decision.

Just a thought....

Have you tried putting all the money you make from this job directly into savings so you KNOW 100% that you can live without it????

Just an idea. Make sure you KNOW you can live without that income. If so, good job and good luck!

Good for you. You have been unhappy for a long time so it is time for a change. I wish you happiness in your work!

Thanks all!

I am going to stay PRN with my current employer if they will let me, perhaps through the summer with a view towards getting a new job in the fall.

Wait -
I am not figuring this right. If he makes $75-140 an hour, he would make about $10k a month net alone.
$75/hr (lowest amt) x 8 hours x 5 day x 50 weeks (even put in a 2 wk vacation) x .80 (to count for 20% in taxes) / 12 months = $10k per month
You are only looking at $8k, right? Don't get too hung up on your expenses, you seem to be doing fine.
Is he billing all 8 hours a day? Are there other expenses he is incurring? What if he brought someone on to do some of the smaller more routine items and paid them a lower rate per hour?

Large financial wealth comes in two ways: Make money using your money (buying property to rent, investing, etc.) or employing people who's work results you can sell for a higher value than you paid them to do it.

Just some thoughts.

Insurers choose to pay different amounts, and there is literally no way to know what you're going to get paid before you get it-- it's crazy.

before you go looking for another job since you husband is now in private practice I would have him check out the difference you are making by working somewhere else and working for him totally with a fake salary.

Just a thought there might be some eye openers there.

After about a year I would hire a business consultant to observe his practice for about a week, and give him tips on development. I might cost a lot up front, but such input can make him much more successful down the road.

Good luck sorting this out. If your would like to go through a career coaching thought process about YOUR ideal situation, email me and I will email back some questions you can work out for yourself that are great to ponder in times of transition.
