Is it absolutely non-transferrable? Any chance you could transfer with a fee? I would look into this. If you can transfer with a fee, sell it to someone.

It you can't, I would let it expire. It sucks to lose $1000, but losing it won't put you any further in debt. Taking a cheap vacation likely will (always the unexpected) or at the very least will take money that could go towards debt.

Thats just my thoughts. Others may have different ideas.

If it was me I would probably use the airline credit and take a vacation. It is possible to find inexpensive places to stay and eat if you research ahead of time and then start setting a little aside here and there just for the trip. Maybe you could find a place to stay where you can make your own meals and then the food cost would be around what it would be if you didn't take the vacation. Maybe use the trip as motivation and a reward for paying a cc down or off.

The reason I had a credit is because we had a trip planned last year and ended up changing the trip so I paid for the airfare upfront, but then we changed and had to pay the airfare for the new trip.

I would use it - but wait to take the vacation until the fall. Come up with a way to pay for it - put all your change in a jar, whatever, and go someplace inexpensive (ITA with pp about DC - beautiful, fun, and so many things are free).

Take the next few months to really sacrifice and get some debt paid. Then take the vacation - pay for it with cash - and use it to re-energize yourself for the next leg of paying off the debt. Everyone deserves to have some fun sometimes, and allowing yourself to do it - guilt free - could be just what you need.

I would definitely use it. This is YOUR money you'd be throwing away if you don't use it. This isn't something like airline miles or whatever that you get simply for flying somewhere else, etc. You paid this money - USE IT.

I would start researching when is the cheapest time to travel - if you're going to Florida try traveling AFTER May 30. Most places are significantly cheaper AFTER the end of April or May and before October 1st because most people don't want to travel to Florida during the really hot months.

Look for inexpensive hotels - like Super 8, Motel 6 or other less amenity hotels. Also, when looking try and find hotels that offer some kind of breakfast. If you can get free breakfast through your hotel, you are automatically eliminating one meal you have to pay for out of pocket once you get there. Most tourist-y places have a wide range of places to eat - from very expensive to fast food. Agree that you'll only go to the expensive places ONCE while you're
