I am a 31 year old woman drowning in debt. I own a small business (dance studio), that is suffering due to the economy. I made the mistake of aquiring a lot of credit card debt, using it for both the start of my business, and personal things.

I'm so sorry you are going through this.

We have a sister board called debt questions and answers. They are very knowledgable about these types of situations and may be able to provide advice. I would copy your message and post it over there.

I have no experience with this so all I can offer is support and virtual (((Hugs))))

I have been through a similar thing. I made many mistakes and if I could do it all over again, I would #1 get a book on how to handle credit card companies. I know they are out there. There's certain ways of dealing with these people. They do many things they are not supposed to do all in trying to get you to pay them their money. They intimidate you, they make you cry, they LIE to you! UHHHHG I hate them! And #2, I would try to get a lawyer to help me through the process. I would at least consult a lawyer and see what they could do for me. I know that you probably have absolutely no money for a lawyer. I thought the same thing, but then I got sued and because I didn't file the papers on time because I was very sick with a pregnancy, I lost and they had to have their money no matter what! Either that, or educate yourself about the litigation process so you don't make mistakes.

Take a deep breath and try to take the fear out of this process. I know it's very scary to deal with these debt collectors. You don't know what to do or who to turn to. I went through a debt settlement company and although I probably wouldn't do that again, they did stop the calls. Friends of mine went through a consolidation service. They had about 25K in debt and it was consolidated into one loan with a low interest rate. I think that's better than debt settlement, as settlement really ruins your credit.

Many of us here have been through the same thing you are going through. I agree with the other poster that you should also ask the debt questions board. I really wish I would have had this board when I was going through the bulk of my credit problems. I'm almost done now and it's been a 4 year process. You get so much support out of this board. People who actually know what you're going through. People you can be honest with.

I have been where you are now, and I want you to try your very best to relax.

These debt collectors are bottom feeding nobodys. They buy old debt for pennies on the dollar in an attempt to scare you enough to get you to pay money to them. Know your rights, and don't let these dirtbags bother you. They are
