Large income tax refund...

On other boards that I visit, people were stunned that people could end up with a $4000, $5000 or $6000 income tax refund. I, myself, wondered how one ends up with a refund that large.

Well, we did our taxes last Friday and we're getting almost $5000 back.

WHOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Congrats!

I personally would love a new fridge!!! LOL.

My DH and I always get a large refund (usually about $8K) but we withhold all we can so we DO get a large refund. This works for us - many have argued with us about why we do that. They do what they wanna do - we do things our way.

I am glad you have some play money. Go and save some of it and enjoy the rest GUILT FREE. You have earned it.

I guess for me if I had a large refund or other windfall I would look at needs first, and then put a little aside for fun - like 10% or so.

So my priorities would be - Efund to $2000 - double the $1k, as this economy is so uncertain.

Certainly makes sense to use at least some of it for fun!! Otherwise its too easy to get fed up, fall off the wagon and THEN STAY OFF!!

Oh yes, a little for fun! It sounds like your other expenditures are very mature, a car to get to work and fridge to eat. I vote for something relaxing for the two of you.

Dh was laid off for part of the year and when he went back to work it was in a much lower paying job (he's a former auto industry worker), so we qualifed for the EIC this year. We haven't qualified for that since he started working at his auto industry job many years ago. That is where the vast majority of our refund came from - that and we have two kids.

Thank you all for making me feel better.

Dh and I don't intend to spend very much of this on "fun" wants -- most of it will be spent on needs. We all NEED summer clothes - so we're planning to spend some of it on clothes (not a lot and we'll all happily shop at WM). We also want to spend a little on some small things for the house. We are definitely buying the fridge and we're putting money away for the down payment on a newer car. We do not currently have a car payment,

I think that not only is it "okay" to have some fun money, I think it's crucial to do so.
