Hi Ladies,

Listened to a talk show about money saving tips and thought to share one that I learned and am doing.

A while back Oprah had on a woman who used to unplug EVERYTHING - even the TV until she needed it.

I admit I tried that tactic for about a day. Until I was annoyed at night that I couldn't turn on a lamp and had to bump into my darn furniture because I didn't want to turn the overhead light on and wake up my kids. Occured to me I had unplugged the darn lamp ! LOL.

Anyway, I have been doing a modified version of this. I unplug all my kitchen appliances unless being used - blender, toaster, coffee pot. I keep clocks plugged in (for obvious reasons) and the TV. I do unplug our radio in the bathroom when we leave for the day. I leave certain things plugged in and remember to unplug others.

I can't say I've noticed a huge savings in electrical costs but I'm sure its making a difference.

Thanks for the tip!

I was told you could also plug things that are too tiresome to be unplugged and plugged all the time to a power strip in a logical group (TV and DVD, computer and printer, etc.) and simply flip the switch on the power strip.

I agree with your post completely, I'm doing my own modified version as well.

I was watching "The Housewives of O.C." and one woman had an energy/green expert to help her.

Thanks for a helpful and informative post!

I have heard about this, but alas, never got around to adjusting my behavior and unplugging dormant sockets or power-stripping my computer and peripherials, TV, etc.

This is a great idea. Does anyone have any idea how to overcome the digital cable box though? If the power goes off, then the stupid box has to reset itself and it takes a good 5-10 minutes to do it. I would HATE to have to deal with this all the time . . . although I guess I could keep that one plugged into the wall and shut off the tv and dvd player?

My DH is a tech nerd into sustainable energy and he set our house up with a single switch we can use to turn off select outlets in the house with one switch.
