My MIL told my DH a few weeks back that she wanted to pay off his car. I don't know why - I didn't ask. We don't always see eye to eye (MIL and me) but she is an AWESOME grandmother to my kids and I always try to focus on the positive.
Anyway, she told my DH to find out the buyout amount and to let her know when we were going to make our next payment. I casually mentioned to DH on Tuesday that I need to make bills out this weekend (we get paid today.) He talked to his mom and she is dropping off a check today - for $8,300 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The full amount we owe on his car.
I am in shock. I just can't believe it. This frees up $340 / month for our c/c. Amazing !!! I am just so excited I can't believe it. We are working so hard - I am busting butt at my second job to stick as much in our efund as we can - right now its about $1,100.
We went from $28,000 in c/c debt in July 2008 to our current total of $15,500. I am so proud of us - we can do this !!!

This is wonderful news for you guys. And it is great for your mother in law to do this for you.
But I hate to say this unless the woman has a lot of money laying around I would expect something is going on in her life that she feels she needs to do this now instead of later.
I know how I was feeling in September after they
Thank you Mary Ann for your concern for my MIL.
My FIL is retired and my FIL's mother left a lot of money to them when she passed. My MIL was contemplating leaving my FIL (long story here) but isn't going to do that. I think she was "saving" that money in case she did end up needing a place of her own. She is doing things around her house that needs fixing - new kitchen table, new carpet, repairing the dec, she got a new car.........She is spending money she was "hoarding" for a rainy day.
My IL's are very well off but they live very frugally. This is a generous gift and I will keep an eye on my MIL's health but I do truly believe she is ok.
I don't know if she is into "chicken soup" type of books but a lot of them and similar books do encourage people NOT to put "everything away" for a special occassion. I have seen numberous stories in those books and elsewhere about the futility of denying yourself and others by keeping the "good stuff" for special occassions that may never come!
What a wonderful gesture.

That is such good news! Stop thinking about why and just accept. If she wanted to talk to you about "why" she would have right away. But she didn't, so go with the flow, say thank you and move on. LOL, are you more excited it frees up 340 a month or the with the actual gift itself? Us debt reducers are funny!!
What a wonderfully selfless thing for her to do!
