Talked ourselves out of a vacation

Friends of ours just got back from Disney World. Their trip sounded amazing. They have 3 kids like us and they had a hotel room inside the park, with the dining plan and they ate and ate and ate at all these fancy places. It sounded like so much fun! I asked her how much she spent. They got the hotel, the tickets, the food and the airfare for $3000 dollars. I started to think...hmmmm, maybe we could do that? We haven't gone on vacation for 3 years because of our debt and I guess it's starting to pull on me to go on vacation. Well, DH and I talked about it and we were going to start saving everything we could to go in September because DIsney is offering a free dining plan, but after some dreaming...we decided we'd be absolutely CRAZY to think we could do this. INSANE! Yes, we probably could come up with $3K by September, but in all honesty...we have no Emergency Fund! We are existing on a prayer and a promise that nothing bad is going to happen to us. So we compromised, we're going to go on a small, local vacation this July that will cost us about $500 dollars, which we already had planned. And we're going to plan a Big trip for next Summer only after we have created our Emergency Fund.

To talk ourselves out of this shows some learned restraint on our part because a few years ago we wouldn't have.

Way to go Abby!

It is amazing to me how helpful this board is. I know it is not good to be scared. I do know how much I have learned personally and from the posters on the board about how stressful it is to not have an emergency fund.

And there is nothing wrong with saving for something you really want. You could put 25 bucks a month into an account for Disney world and add to when you have the money, even while you are paying down debt. Then you sorta have a head start. Put more into emergency fund when you have it also. Or 10 into Disney and 15 into emergency? Lots of possibilities!

I want my cake and to be able to eat it too. That is why I am paying down debt and have a car fund.

" So you can well imagine the conversation at home : "We need to go to London. We should think of it as filling a prescription!" "

Do you think you could convince your extended medical insurance that they should pay for it?
