Insufficient Funds Fees! EEK!

I have struggled many times in my life with overdraft fees. The most I was charged at one time was over $200 dollars and that was last October. Since then, I have changed many of my ways. I switched to a credit union where they only charge $25 per overdraft, as opposed to $39 at my other bank, and they connect my savings to my checking at no cost. I also diligently keep track of my accounts on quicken. I have been doing so well...until this week! I sent in my mortgage payment and I knew that would eat up all of my money at the credit union, so we've been using my other account for expenses for awhile. I noticed my balance was low and I deposited 50 dollars, which more than covered things. Then I started to notice that I had a negative balance, but I figured that the balance would fix itself when the bank caught up with when I deposited the money. but NOOOO...they have changed their policies. They no longer count the money available when you deposit it, but when it's actually available. In the past, they have always fixed my account to show when the money was actually put in. They have also changed their policy on courtesy rebates. They no longer do those now. I talked to two different people and wrote a letter. I told them very clearly that I would be canceling my account with them because of this issue. They didn't care! So I got hit with 2 fees, totaling 78 dollars. So depressing!

You will work it out. Frustrating it is though. You are the customer and should get what you want.

I am so sorry you were doing so well with your money. Now for this to happen. On Carmen's show the other night they were talking about the new laws coming out and how they are going to effect all of us and the banking we do every day.

I know we used to have a terrible problem with over drafts in the old days. Thank God those days have ended. What I did was add a few cents to each amount I put into quicken to give me a little lead way. A back up so to speak. It helped us Not over night of course because I would only add 25 cents or 50 cents here and there. But in time it gave me a little extra in our account. The secret is no matter what don't touch that money.

Years ago when I had problems it was usually due to not writing down an ATM withdrawal, so I automatically subtracted an extra withdrawal, and actually built that up to about $200(for me a lot cuz I would usually not take out more than $75).
