I keep receipts until I see that my accounts reflect the correct balance or until I'm sure I won't need to return anything. Unless they're for tax purposes or something equally file-worthy, I shred or toss them at that point.
My debt payoff is tracked on a spreadsheet - couldn't be easier!
I am for tax purposes and large items. I have a shoebox that I throw them into and then at the end of the month (or two or three, who am I kidding) I sort and file. Its been helpful to me since I have always been able to find things that I am looking for pretty quickly!

Bf and I have an important basket I set up. All the opened mail and receipts go in there. Then I sort it once in awhile(every couple weeks) and file things, throw them out or do something with it(pay it or reorganize). We have a filing cabinet, and the unimportant receipts get grouped by month(I am making a spread sheet to track our spending), and other receipts that are tax worthy get put into the next years tax file. I also have several other file folders in the cabinet like car, one for each bank statement or loan, kids, phone, hydro, mortgage, insurance, etc......
I keep my payment receipts when I pay bills online, but once they hit that virtual file, I never see them again.

I keep all receipts, even grocery stores for the most part, and file them every couple weeks or so.
