I just went to put the nightmare bloodsucking card (0 balance now, yay) into my little box with my other CCs. The cards spilled onto the floor and I almost had a heart attack! There were at least 10 dept store cards there: Macys, JC Penney, Sears, American Eagle, Gap, NY & Co, Old Navy, Target, Kohls.....When holiday shopping I probably got sucked in too many times with the % off teaser when you apply for a CC at the store.
The big question: Do I cancel some? Or get my credit report (I was about to anyways) and just cancel ones where there has been no activity at all? I already know that the really long standing cards I should keep for good history.
Right now I have a bank visa (10k) and an Amex (@1,700) left to pay off...
*****I thought your credit is damaged if you close accounts. Is this true??
-Thanks

Don't know about anyone else's but I canceled and consolidated a few cards in one day and We were hurt bad by it. Lost about a 100 points in one day. Took us a year to come back and still am not where I was. But I haven't checked lately either so we might be.
Carmen says to do one every 6 months or so. But I have also heard that to just cut up the cards and don't use them
Just curious - do you have to pay to get your FICO score?
I did once paid 45.00 to get all three.
But there is this web site that will give you one free. It is something like Karma or something like that. But I found out that is not a real true FICO but it is close
Someone listed it on the board before
Maybe someone will a better memory can remember the real name of the site.

Hi there,
I just wanted to let you know that Carmen Wong Ulrich from CNBC's On the Money has recently answered a similar question on her show. You can find the video right here at iVillage.
I hope she helps answer your question.
