safety deposit box vs. firebox

I have always used a safety deposit box to store our valuable documents. It's what my dad does...so I just continued the trend. I keep our wills, birth certificates, stock certificates and other documents in there.
I just got the bill for this year and it has gone up to $60 for the smallest box! I'm not sure...but wouldn't that about cover the cost of a firebox to keep in our home?
What I was wondering is where others keep their valuables and why. I was always concerned about a firebox getting lost and not just protecting my valuables in the event of a fire.
Any thoughts?

We don't have a safety deposit box but my parents gave us a firebox for a Christmas present after I got married. It's cheaper, but unfortunately we have to get another as more and more documents have come into the house that we need to keep. I also keep death certificates, social security cards, birth certificates, my passport, and second set of our wedding pictures and a few other things. I also keep the key in a different spot than where the box is located so someone can't get into it. For my family, a firebox is much cheaper in the long run to have rather than wait for the bank to open up to get to my stuff.
