As Ive posted here, Im just a couple months into trying to work my way out of the debt my husband has gotten us into. I am lucky...I have a decent job and think I just may be able to get through this without declaring bankruptcy.

You live and you learn when dealing with debt. I've learned so much going through this process. I've learned about how lawyers and debt collectors work. I've learned to read the fine print. I've learned to look at every bill. I've learned to know my bank's policies on overdrafts and stopped payments and all the in between. I've had more than my fair share of overdraft fees! In fact, it was 7 overdraft fees that finally made me get my butt in gear and learn how to keep track of my bank accounts. I decided to buy Quicken and except for one fee that was caused by a change in my bank's policy I wasn't aware of, I haven't had another bank charge in a year! It is so stressful and when you're going through it, it definitely does rule your life and it's all you can think about. You feel alone and stupid! But you're not alone! There are so many people in this world in the same situation, going through the same problems and keeping it a secret out of shame and fear. I found out really quickly that I needed someone to talk to about it and I picked 2 of my close friends and my parents. Whenever I needed to talk about some really bad situation I was in, I called them. Then I found this board, more towards the end of my debt struggle and I love it here! Good luck and make sure that you can find a way to de-stress...yoga or a friend or something! You will get better at this! And when you fall down, you just have to pick yourself back up and keep going.

It will definately get better and easier. I am still working on the whole budget thing, but I do have all of my incomings and outgoings each week set up into a Excel Spreadsheet. It really helps me to see what is to be paid what week, and then I just set it up with either online banking or the company itself. If you like, I can send you an example of what mine looks like. Just let me know. Liz

Can you turn the tables and instead of having those companies debit your checking account, use YOUR online banking and pay FROM your checking to them?

It takes a while but you will get really good at all the money stuff.

I use a simple 1.00 little note book from the dollar store. I have what comes out of each check a month We get two and then when they come in I just go down the list and put them in the bill pay . I do bills for the whole month that one day
