Still in Debtors Anonymous

Well, as some of you know, I went through hell a year and a half ago when my life collapsed into bankruptcy. It was a horrible experience but I was really helped and suppported by the people on this board.

I joined Debtors Anonymous and it is now 13 months since I've borrowed any money at all - not even from mom! It is a really good program. It has helped me develop a spending plan which changes every month. I get to buy what I want by putting a category into my savings plan which will accumulate funds until I am able to buy it.

It has been a rocky road but this program gives me hope. I never want to give those credit card companies one more cent of my money. I got a secured credit card where I put the money on it and spend it when needed - which is almost never!

I can't hardly explain it. My whole attitude has changed towards how I spend money and how I feel about credit cards. I know Debtors Anonymous is not available in a lot of areas yet but there are phone meetings. You would just have to check out their website (.org NOT .com).

My problem was borrowing money to pay debts hence getting deeper and deeper into debt. Those payday loans still haunt me and I've had to block them from sending me advertisements. Yuck! They are the worst. I wish I had joined this program years ago! I still hope by some miracle that I may have another house one day but even if I don't, I know there are miracles for me ahead!

Travi - how wonderful. I'm so glad to hear that DA is working for you. You sound 100% in control of your situation, and *that* is fantastic!

All my best,

Thanks Kelli. I can understand how you would be worried. I myself was so worried about being by myself one night, I took myself to the hospital. I did not trust myself not to commit suicide. Gawd! That was a nightmare! Thanks for your kind words.

Thanks Bex! Honestly, the pressure of debt almost killed me. By the grace of God, I'll never go "there" again!

Thanks Auntydoxzz - I remember you well. Since I was on this board, desperate for support, I joined D.A.

Thanks Danni! Actually, I put God in charge of my finances. If I was in charge, I'd likely be back to square one! My thinking is sooooo distorted around spending and money.

Hi Marie, thanks for your kind words. Well, D.A is a 12 step program. Compulsive spending and debting is seen as an illness of compulsivity and obsessiveness. I think the medical community would agree 100%. I used spending to self-medicate because I was so depressed and miserable with my life. The more unhappy I was, the more I spent money.
