I have been with Debt Work Solutions since early 2006 and I am very satisfied with their service. They settled my credit cards of about 20k and lowered my payments from $1100mo to $749. I have about 12 months left in the program and so far no complaints.

How did they do that?

It appears you give them a large chunk of $ monthly to save towards a settlement offer.

When I entered the program I was already behind on my credit cards so I wasn't making anymore payments on them. All I was required to do was make the one payment Debt Work Solutions set me up on. From my understanding, even if you're not late on any payments once you enroll into the program, you stop making your monthly payments towards the credit cards. The only thing that WILL happen is that your credit will be affected while you're in the program because of the late payments that are reported, but in my case my credit was already being affected... it just wasn't making sense for me to continue making the minimum payments and not seeing any of my principle go down! I called my credit cards and they could care less about helping me.. good luck

I personally wouldn't work with a company that tells you to stop paying your cc's. I started working with CCCS/MMI back in May and I am very happy with them. I have had no problems with any of my payments being received by my creditors or anything. CCCS/MMI and debt solution companies are not the same. Although, in some way they all have a negative impact on your credit, with CCCS/MMI it shows that you are still paying as agreed whereas with a debt solution company it will say that you are late.
I would definately either try to pay on your own, or if you can't then give CCCS/MMI a call.

Be careful...

I did a similar thing with a company called Credit Solutions and I was sued by a credit card. I was ordered by the court to pay them within a ridiculous amount of time. Also, I just read an article off of yahoo this morning on things you should never pay for and debt management is one of them. There are services out there that will help you manage your debt and not charge you money to do it. You can do this yourself if you have the knowledge. If I could go back and do it all over again, I'd go to the library and get books, I'd take a look at Oprah's Debt Diet system where she tells you what to say to the credit card companies. I'd do anything except going through a debt company. I had tons of heartache and stress and I ruined my credit.
