Is there any chance that your current boss would be able to pay more? He may be able to come up with a bit more money to keep you where you are. Just a thought.
When looking, and it never hurts to look, would it be possible to show the current boss the difference in pay? Loyalties are great, but they don't pay the bills, and if he/she is as great as you say they are, they will more than understand this. Would it be possible to still do some work for the old employer?

I determined that if things got to the point that I had no other choice but to look for work elsewhere because he can't afford to pay me more, that I would offer to do some of the work on a contract basis.
