RE: Date Line Expose on illegal methods of intimidation and terrorism practices as 'debt collecting'.
My dh and I watched an enlightening expose on Date Line tonight (Sunday at 8PM) on debt collectors. They tract these calls being made, pretending to be police officers even with warrants to arrest and imprison. The calls were traced back to a shoddy office out of Buffalo, NY, being made by a bunch of thugs who had warrants out for their arrests. They have been raking in millions of dollars, getting paid via Western Union by the intimidated.
On the upside:
The owner was arrested (he also had some kind of sex industry/web industry exploitation with use of a highly offensive van in operation).
An official of NY, Mr. Cuomo, was shown making press statements that the government will be pursuing this brand of illegal debt collecting.
So it sounds like the government is looking HARD at these thugs that keep harassing us.
I hope you get to see this expose, a lot more was shown, like undercover video interviews of people in the call centers drinking beer and admitting its fun to call debtors' BOSSES at HOME to rat out the individual who had some old debt that may have been very old and charged off. The workers at the call center admitted that they us illegal tactics knowing their company will be sued because the company can afford to pay off the lawsuits as they rake in millions of dollars from scared debtors.
Or how a military couple was harassed that they would be kicked out of the military by a debt collector posing as a military investigator. The military couple SUED the debt collector and WON!
Date Line encourages anyone who suspects that they are being mistreated to research the Fair Debtor Collection Protection Act (FDCPA) which is now in place to protect consumers from these thugs. I know that this has been stated here on DSG in the past, but it's always great to bring it up again for those who need it now.
